First Day of School Where do I begin? I arrived at the school at 6:40. I turned on the radio and listened to NPR as I readied myself for the day. I soon realized that I did not have any transparency pens, and, that the dry erase board that I have does not work. What I mean is that the ink vanishes soon after you write on it . Luckily, a teacher down the hall was kind enough to give me three pens. The overhead was now in order.

I actually skimmed a few pages of Harry Wong. Just when I was getting into Wong it was time to go to the gym to get my kids. Yes, I am already referring to the students as my kids. It’s easier that way- I suppose.

I get the kids and bring them to my classroom and they are all well-mannered. I am not surprised; I expected this. Soon though, groups are formed and alliances made at the tables. Immediately, I pick out the trouble makers in my mind.

As an aside, and before I forget, I have new insight as to why most teachers look like Picasso paintings: completely out of shape and in odd forms with a bit of a weight problem. More on this later…

Today was the first day that I had to decorate my classroom. Already the veteran teachers are wearing on me. They pretend to be giving by bringing trash to my room and passing it off as useful curriculum material. Oh yeah? If it’s so useful and good then why in the hell do they not keep it in their room?

I pissed one off by telling her I didn’t think I would ever use the material she was trying dump in my room. The material was a metal file cabinet full of dusty file folders that had not been used in at least a decade. She finally said that she would just throw it away. I later discerned that the only reason she wanted to give it to me was so that I would move the file cabinet out of her room and into mine. Now she has to move it or find someone to move it for her.

The room is coming along just fine.
